Ralph & my Left Hand

Ralph on the Rocks
My left hand
Ralph the pelican now lives happily on a rock amongst corals & algae.
It's been seven months since I quit biting my nails.
Bit them really bad for almost 40 years
so I can't believe I have 'normal' hands now :)

Well done. I too am a 'biter' and picker. I have phases where I manage to stop, and by diligently rubbing handcream on my hands EVERY time I wash them, and EVERy night when I go to bed, I eventually get them to a state where they actually look nice (not at the moment though). They dry out very easily my hands, especially as I am painting most of the time. Then, something will spark it off, stress usually...I start picking and biting again, then back to square one...crap looking hands. So, very...very...very...VERY well done.

Wow, your hands are beautiful! They don't look 40 years old! Congratulations too, on seven months, it is hard to give up habits!

That is a lovely hand. Funny to find so many of us have battled the same issue... I would like to stop picking at my poor nails, but better yet: I would like to find any better way to cope with stress!

Its been five years for me.... Knitting has been very good for me to release my nervous energy in healthy ways. I picked up my paintbrush today, there were actual cobwebs on them!(I am going to reward myself with some new paper and colors soon.) Thank you for continuing to inspire.

So hard, but so worth it! I had to stop when I started my career working with food~ not only unsanitary but getting lemon juice on them was painful!! :)

Keep it up! And gorgeous ring too BTW.

Great that you have nice fingernails now. Mine always look bitten down because they're always breaking. Enjoyable photos and love the Pelican.

It feels so good to see that I am not the only one who constantly battles nail biting. I've been biting for almost 60 years now, and I hate it! I have quit a few times for about a year, but something happens and I start again. It's my biggest shame. When i'm not biting, I feel so much more confident. Good for you. I hope you keep it up.

Congratulations! I bite my nails too. Sometimes I manage to let them grow, but only when one of them brakes and is short again, I can`t stop myself from biting again, so it`s really something that you don`t bite again at all Geninne. Well done!

How funny that YOU -- really, a video of your beautiful hands painting -- inspired me to quit biting my nails this past March. I thought, "I'd really like to have a video of my hands painting too, but I've bitten the poor nails down to nubs." Now my hands look great, and so do yours. Thanks so much. It's time for me to shoot my video, eh? :D

I am 67 years old and I take prenatal vitamins (my doctor prescribes them for me). They are really cheap ($10.00 for 3 months supply) and they make my nails stronger so they don't snag on things and make me want to "Clean" them up. If you want to destress yourself, look up Zentangle on Google Images and go to www.zentangle.com to learn about this art form. I promise you will destress and your hands will be busy drawing (the people who "can't draw" are usually the most successful!) and your nails will grow.

I can't believe it.. I saw the photo before I read the text and I thought.. "oh, not only is she an incredible artist but of course she so full of self discipline and control that she also has perfect fingernails".. then I started feeling terribly guilty as I always do about my horribly bitten nails..

....then I read your text and breathed a huge sigh of relief and felt so great!... you were a nail biter too!... there is hope for me yet... please tell us more about how you managed to stop... I am so keen to do this as soon as possible.. and by the way, congratulations!

So beautiful! I know it wasn't easy. I used to bite and peel and tear up my poor fingers. My mom would try to get me to stop, take me for manicures, etc. It's something we just have to decide to do on our own and you did it! Hooray you!

I too am a nail biter and would love to know "how you did it." I stopped a few years ago (like 10 years ago, actually) and when things became more stressful in my life I started again, and I cannot seem to control it. I've tried everything: painting yucky-tasting stuff on them, regular manicures, "falsies" (I picked them off), bribing myself, others bribing me...right now I am at one of the lowest points in my life. Can I stop amidst all this chaos? I don't know. I wish someone could help me.

On a brighter note, I love your site! Found it through Liv Lane's blogging course.

Please come visit me sometime.
